Dr. Mark Churaman
Dr. Mark Churaman, Doctor of Excellence (Honoris Causa), United Arab Emirates
Some careers are built inside one industry, refined over decades until every process is second nature. Others are built by crossing industries entirely—carrying the same core discipline from telecom infrastructure into banking, then into digital finance, and finally into the boardroom conversations now shaping how artificial intelligence gets deployed at scale.
Based in Abu Dhabi, Mark works today as an Asset Management and AI & Digital Vice President, alongside parallel roles as a value management thought leader, adjunct lecturer, and executive educator. Across 35 years spanning telecom, banking, energy, and retail, he has built a body of work now recognised through a Doctor of Excellence (Honoris Causa) from East Bridge University.
A Technical Foundation, Built Early
Mark's grounding combined the technical and the commercial from the very start. He completed a Diploma in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, specialising in Light Current systems, at the Durban University of Technology, paired with a Higher Diploma in Business Management from Damelin—an early signal of the dual instinct that would define his career: understanding both how systems work and how businesses run them.
That combination carried him into telecom infrastructure leadership at Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise, where as WAN Business Unit Head he held full P&L responsibility, managing network design, solution pricing, and implementation teams across Johannesburg. He then moved to Ericsson as Systems Integration CPM and Bid Manager, delivering telecoms projects across the SubSaharan Africa region—work that demanded both deep technical fluency and the commercial discipline to win and deliver complex, multi-country bids.
From Telecom into Banking's Digital Core
In 2006, Mark's career shifted into banking, joining Standard Bank South Africa as Project Manager for Payments, working across SWIFT and STRATE infrastructure. He then moved to Absa as Program Manager for Payments and Business Process Reengineering, leading SWIFT and message management programs and moving test capability offshore to a Barclays facility in India. It was Absa that sponsored his MBA studies—support he used to complete a Master of Business Administration in Project Management through Regenesys Education, alongside Advanced Project Management study at The George Washington University School of Business.
From 2013 to 2018, Mark led PMO and Delivery Management as AVP at Nedbank, overseeing change management, analytics and reporting, and identity access governance across one of South Africa's major banking groups—a role that brought together every discipline he had built over the previous fifteen years into a single enterprise-wide mandate.
Building Digital Transformation in the UAE.
In 2019, Mark relocated to the UAE, joining Deem Finance as Digital Transformation Head. In just over a year, he led an end-to-end digital transformation program that successfully launched six new credit cards in the UAE market, spanning technology partners including AWS, Azure, Oracle e-Suite, and Mastercard, while holding direct budget and delivery responsibility to the CEO.
Since November 2020, he has served as Digital Portfolio Head at ADNOC Distribution, where his focus has increasingly centred on artificial intelligence within the organisation's broader digital portfolio—a natural extension of a career spent governing complex technology investment.
Leadership, Coaching, and Independent Research
Running alongside his corporate roles, Mark has spent close to nine years as a Certified Leadership Consultant with Maxwell Leadership, evolving from Agile-focused leadership coaching into corporate coaching and keynote speaking, particularly on preparing the next generation of leaders to take intentional responsibility for their own growth. He also serves as a Partner with the Swiss Leaders Group.
More recently, he has moved further into academia and thought leadership, joining Curtin University Dubai as an Adjunct Lecturer in Information Systems and Project Management, and the Middle East CXO Tech Council convened by MIT Sloan Management Review. He has also completed postgraduate study in Data Science at The University of Texas at Austin.
Mark describes his current focus as independent research into AI-mediated decision authority and leadership within the UAE and GCC context—examining the gap between how quickly organisations adopt AI and how ready their leaders actually are to govern it. From that inquiry, he has developed what he calls the 4×4 Multi-Zone AI Leadership Matrix, a framework mapping technology deployment maturity against human leadership readiness, intended to support firmer governance and more disciplined technology investment decisions.
In June 2026, that body of work received wider recognition when Mark was honoured with the Global Excellence Award for Excellence in Digital Transformation and AI Leadership from the Global Excellence Conclave. A Doctor of Excellence (Honoris Causa) is awarded differently from a research-based or coursework doctorate. It does not require years of formal academic study—it is conferred in recognition of demonstrated leadership, professional excellence, and sustained contribution to a field, built and proven directly in practice.
For Mark, that recognition reflects 35 years spent moving across industries and disciplines, culminating in his current work governing AI and digital transformation at enterprise scale, while also developing his own independent thinking on how leadership itself must evolve alongside the technology it governs. It is a distinction worth naming precisely: not a claim to a formally conferred doctoral degree, but a formal acknowledgement of expertise built, tested, and now shared across an entire career.
A Career Built Across Industries
East Bridge University congratulates Mark Churaman on receiving the Doctor of Excellence (Honoris Causa), and welcomes him to its global community of honorary doctoral recipients. His journey offers a valuable perspective for professionals navigating the shift toward AI-driven organisations: technical mastery and leadership readiness rarely advance at the same pace, and closing that gap is quickly becoming one of the defining challenges of executive leadership. Few are better positioned to speak to it than someone who spent 35 years building both halves of that equation, one industry at a time.
For professionals whose excellence has been proven across industries and disciplines rather than in a single classroom, East Bridge University's Honoris Causa recognitions offer a way to formally acknowledge achievements already earned. The Honoris Causa provided by East Bridge University are self paced, and made for working professionals.
