Dr. Tony Meneghella
From Vendor Contracts to Participative Democracy: Dr. Tony Meneghella's Journey with an Applied Doctorate in Public Administration
Careers built on discipline and delivery often look, from the outside, like a straight line. But for professionals who spend decades inside large, complex organisations, that discipline eventually raises a bigger question: the same principles that keep a business running smoothly also shape how entire communities make decisions together.
Few careers illustrate that shift as clearly as Dr. Tony Meneghella's.
Based in Australia, with more than three decades of experience in project management, IT contract oversight, vendor relationships, and business transformation, much of it within one of the world's largest hospitality companies, Tony built a career on strong operational frameworks. In under five years, his scope widened from delivering a single nine-month engagement to overseeing supplier and contract structures across an entire region spanning more than 300 properties.
His doctoral research took that instinct somewhere less expected: into how digital tools and participation can shape decision-making in public life. His Applied Doctorate in Public Administration, Digital Democracy and Participative Governance from East Bridge University, awarded with Distinction, is the result.
A Career Shaped by Continuous Learning
For Tony, learning was never something that ended with a qualification. Every new responsibility brought a new question, and every question led him back to learning.
That pattern started early. After school at Kent Street Senior High, he completed a Graduate Diploma in Management Systems at Swinburne University of Technology, followed a decade later by a Master's in Enterprise from the University of Melbourne. He later became a PRINCE2 Practitioner and earned an Earned Value Management certification, graduating second in his class—skills he would use throughout his career to measure and steer complex initiatives.
Delivering Under Pressure, Then Building the System
Much of Tony's career involved stepping into demanding transformation work on consulting terms, where trust has to be earned quickly and results delivered precisely. As a Project Management Consultant with Acquest Medical and later Acquest Healthcare in Bangkok, he helped move a medical start-up from early-stage research through to commercial operations, in a sector where regulatory stakes leave little margin for error. Between those engagements, as Project Director with Marriott International, he led the integration of Starwood's Macau properties—the Sheraton and the St. Regis—into Marriott's systems, delivering the full scope of change on time and under budget.
That project became a turning point. In 2020, Tony rejoined Marriott to manage the transition of technology supply and support across more than 300 properties in Mainland China, moving the organisation from a single supplier to several independent ones. His responsibilities then widened further as Director, Contract and Vendor Management APAC, where he negotiated and localised IT contract terms across multiple markets and jurisdictions.
In his final role, Director, IT, Product and Vendor Governance APAC, he built Marriott's regional Centre-of-Expertise for contract training and execution, and introduced a new framework for working with second-tier suppliers. He was no longer only delivering projects—he was designing the operational structures an entire region would rely on.
Why an Applied Doctorate Matched Tony's Professional Journey
An Applied Doctorate is built specifically for professionals like Tony: people who already carry years of practical responsibility and want to examine the thinking behind their decisions more rigorously.
For Tony, East Bridge University offered something rarer than a credential: a doctorate built around a working professional's life, not against it. Its structure let him research alongside a demanding regional role, rather than choosing between career and study. The Distinction he earned reflects a program that pushed him to think rigorously without pulling him away from the responsibilities that gave his research its edge.
A few things made it a natural fit. The program is designed for experienced practitioners rather than early-career students, so the learning builds directly on lived expertise. The research stays connected to real challenges rather than abstract theory—for Tony, that meant questions he had already faced in practice: how to build trust across stakeholders with competing interests, how to create accountability without adding unnecessary bureaucracy, and how to scale oversight across a large, diverse group of people. This program also gave him a way to contribute knowledge back to his field, turning years of operational experience into research that others could learn from.
These questions overlap more than they first appear, whether the group in question is technology suppliers across a region or citizens within a democracy. In both cases, the challenge is the same: designing a process that people trust enough to participate in honestly.
Tony's doctorate, which ran from January 2020 through January 2026, unfolded alongside his most demanding professional years rather than after them. Rather than stepping away from his career to study, he let the two run in parallel—so the ideas he was researching in the evenings were often the same ones he was testing at work the next morning.
From Corporate Leadership to Advocacy and Coaching
Since February 2025, Tony has led Meneghella Advisory, working as a Consultant, Coach and Advocate. Reflecting on the move, he has said that after his time with Marriott ended, he chose to dedicate the year to work that mattered—applying his experience where it could bring clarity, stability, and support to people and organisations.
The shift makes sense in light of his research. Where his corporate career focused on building frameworks that organisations could rely on, his current work focuses on the people navigating them—applying the same instincts for stakeholder engagement, facilitation, and organisational development directly with the individuals and teams he now advises. It is, in many ways, a continuation of the same question his doctorate asked at a societal level: how do you help people find their footing within a system, rather than simply asking them to comply with it?
A Career That Continues to Widen
From a classroom in Western Australia to management studies at Swinburne, an enterprise master's at Melbourne, healthcare transformation work in Thailand, and years spent building supplier and contract frameworks across Marriott's Asia-Pacific footprint, Tony's career has kept expanding while holding onto the same instinct: bring clarity and structure to complex situations.
His Applied Doctorate extends that instinct further—from managing supplier relationships within one organisation to studying how entire systems of public participation can be designed to earn trust.
East Bridge University congratulates Dr. Tony Meneghella on completing his Applied Doctorate with Distinction, and welcomes him to its global community of doctoral graduates. For professionals who have spent years building expertise and now want to transform that experience into research-driven impact, an Applied Doctorate can provide the pathway to the next stage of their journey. They would find East Bridge University's Applied Doctorate programmes, designed for experienced professionals ready to take that next step quite helpful and informative, perfect to level up onto the journey ahead.
