Dr. Zafeer Shamsudeen
From Commercial Expertise to Strategic Leadership: The Professional Journey of Dr. Zafeer Shamsudeen
Leadership is rarely built through a single role, qualification, or defining moment. More often, it develops over years of taking on greater responsibility, adapting to changing markets, working with diverse teams, and learning from the challenges that come with each stage of a career.
This is particularly true in sectors such as FMCG and agribusiness, where consumer expectations, distribution models, retail environments, and competitive pressures continue to change. Senior leaders today are expected to understand much more than their immediate function. They need to connect commercial strategy with people, operations, governance, market realities, and long-term business growth.
Dr. Zafeer Shamsudeen's professional journey offers an interesting example of how such leadership develops over time.
With more than three decades of experience spanning finance, banking, sales, marketing, FMCG, dairy, and agribusiness, his career has taken him across Sri Lanka and some of the GCC's most important markets. What began with roles in audit and accounting gradually evolved into a career in regional commercial leadership, market development, and business transformation.
His association with East Bridge University (EBU) and the recognition of his work in **Strategic Leadership and Enterprise Transformation** add another dimension to a career built around continuous professional development.
Building Leadership from the Ground Up
Dr. Zafeer's career began in Sri Lanka in 1994 as an Audit Associate, followed by experience in accounting and subsequently finance and information technology with MashreqBank.
The move that would significantly shape his professional journey came in 2000, when he joined Almarai. Over the next 20 years, his career within the organisation progressed from accounting-focused responsibilities to increasingly senior roles in sales and regional commercial management.
He worked across Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, the UAE, and other Gulf markets. His progression included positions such as Country Accountant, Area Accountant, Sales Supervisor, Senior Sales Supervisor, Area Sales Manager, and Regional Sales Manager.
This gradual movement from finance into sales and commercial leadership gave him something particularly valuable: an understanding of business from more than one perspective.
Rather than viewing commercial performance only through sales figures, his experience enabled him to understand the financial discipline, operational structures, market execution, and people management behind sustainable growth.
By the latter years of his tenure with Almarai, he was handling regional responsibilities across multiple GCC markets, including leadership of retail frozen operations across Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain.
Taking on Broader Commercial Leadership
After two decades with Almarai, Dr. Zafeer moved into senior sales, brand, and marketing leadership with Al Rawabi in Dubai.
Beginning as Sales and Brand Manager, he progressed to Head of Sales & Brand and later Director of Sales Marketing. These roles further broadened his experience beyond sales execution into brand development and wider commercial strategy.
Since January 2023, he has served as General Manager – Sales at IFFCO Group in Dubai, continuing his work within the FMCG and agribusiness space.
Across these roles, his professional focus has developed around some of the most important areas of commercial leadership: route-to-market strategy, distribution optimisation, retail execution, market entry, profitability improvement, commercial transformation, and performance governance.
His experience covers modern trade, traditional trade, and HORECA channels, alongside the realities of managing large commercial teams and complex distribution networks across different markets.
Today, this depth of experience also enables him to contribute at a strategic and advisory level, particularly in areas such as GCC market expansion, commercial transformation, leadership structuring, and governance-led growth.
A Career Supported by Continuous Learning
One of the notable aspects of Dr. Zafeer's journey is that professional experience has been accompanied by a consistent investment in learning.
He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Bedfordshire and has continued his professional development through the Chartered Institute of Marketing.
His professional standing also extends across internationally recognised management and marketing bodies. He is a Chartered Marketer and member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing, a Fellow and Certified Practising Marketer with the Australian Marketing Institute, and a Chartered Manager and Fellow of the Chartered Management Institute.
Beyond his corporate responsibilities, Dr. Zafeer contributes to the wider professional community. His profile includes his involvement as Volunteer Chair within the CIM Middle East community, advisory-level contribution within the CMI framework, and engagement with the Harvard Business Review advisory network.
These engagements reflect a stage in his career where experience is no longer limited to managing business performance. It is also being used to contribute to professional dialogue, leadership development, and industry capability.
Recognising a Journey in Strategic Leadership and Enterprise Transformation
Dr. Zafeer's association with East Bridge University reflects this broader stage of his professional journey.
He received the Doctor of Excellence in Strategic Leadership and Enterprise Transformation from East Bridge University, recognising a career shaped by leadership across markets, commercial transformation, and sustained professional contribution.
For an experienced business leader, such recognition carries significance beyond the title itself. It creates an opportunity to reflect on the body of work built over decades—the organisations served, teams led, markets developed, challenges addressed, and knowledge accumulated along the way.
In Dr. Zafeer's case, Strategic Leadership and Enterprise Transformation closely align with the progression visible throughout his career. His journey has involved moving across functions, countries, commercial environments, and levels of responsibility while continually adapting his leadership approach to the needs of the business.
It also reflects a larger idea that becomes increasingly relevant at senior levels: professional growth does not necessarily end when an executive reaches a leadership position.
For many experienced professionals, this stage can instead become an opportunity to consolidate what they have learned, contribute their knowledge more widely, and prepare for new roles in advisory leadership, governance, mentoring, or organisational transformation.
From Managing Markets to Contributing at a Strategic Level
After more than three decades in business, Dr. Zafeer's career is entering a phase where the value of experience extends well beyond operational leadership.
His knowledge of GCC markets, combined with experience in finance, sales, marketing, distribution, commercial strategy, and people leadership, provides a foundation for contributing to organisations from a broader strategic perspective.
This is especially relevant for businesses entering or expanding across GCC markets, where success requires more than a strong product or commercial proposition. Leaders need to understand distribution structures, channel dynamics, retail execution, local market conditions, profitability, and the organisational discipline required to bring these elements together.
Dr. Zafeer's journey demonstrates how that understanding is developed—not overnight, but through years spent working within markets, leading teams, making decisions, and taking responsibility for results.
It is this combination of experience and continued learning that has shaped his evolution from a finance professional into a regional commercial leader and, increasingly, a strategic advisor.
Continuing the Journey
Dr. Zafeer Shamsudeen's career is a reminder that professional excellence is not defined by how quickly someone reaches a senior position. It is often found in the depth of experience accumulated along the way and the ability to keep learning as responsibilities change.
From his early years in audit and banking to two decades of progression at Almarai, senior leadership at Al Rawabi, and his current role with IFFCO Group, each stage has added another layer to his understanding of business and leadership.
East Bridge University is pleased to recognise Dr. Zafeer Shamsudeen's professional journey and his contribution to strategic leadership and enterprise transformation.
As he continues to engage with organisations, leadership teams, and the wider professional community, his story offers a valuable perspective for other experienced professionals: career achievement is not necessarily the end of learning. In many cases, experience itself becomes the foundation for the next stage of professional contribution.
